For Chaïm Soutine (1893-1943), painting is an existential need, which takes precedence over everything else. The unclassifiable artist never ceased to project his anxieties and uncertainties in his works: the flamboyant colors, applied with a knife, the distorted perspectives, the deformed portraits create a dramatic and disconcerting atmosphere, which touched only a handful of initiates before the power of his art was revealed by Willem de Kooning, Jackson Pollock or Francis Bacon, heirs to his tormented expressionism.
